Flexibility

Flexibility and mobility

Useful movement involves both range of motion and control. In coaching, I want you to move comfortably through the ranges your daily life and training require.

How they relate

Flexibility describes the available range of motion around a joint. Mobility is often used in coaching to describe how you actively access and control a range. Terminology varies, so focus on the task you want to perform.

Stretching can improve range of motion over time. Strength and movement practice help you use that range. More flexibility is not always better; aim for the movement your goals require.

Keep the explanation practical

Muscles, connective tissues and the nervous system all influence movement and your response to stretching. Changes in stretch tolerance and tissue properties are more complex than simply switching one reflex on and another off.

Movement depends on the task

The joint-by-joint illustration is a coaching framework, not a diagnosis. Joints need both movement and stability, and an illustration cannot identify the cause of someone’s pain.

Start with a comfortable range

Warm up with easy movement. For a static stretch, move slowly into gentle tension, breathe normally and avoid bouncing or pushing into pain. A hold of roughly 10–30 seconds is a common starting approach, adjusted to the person.

Before activity, controlled movements that resemble the upcoming task can help prepare you. Persistent pain needs individual assessment rather than a generic stretch prescription.
